General Summary:

The Fiber Yard Superintendent is responsible for operations in Fiber Yard, Reject Yard, and surrounding areas, this includes ensuring a safe work environment. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing crew members, quality control, mobile equipment operations, and housekeeping. This position requires a strong concern and understanding of safety concepts, procedures, and regulations. This individual must understand inventory procedures and basic computer skills. They must be able to communicate clearly with the team and others, and have the ability to operate mobile equipment when needed. They must be self-motivated, have a drive for continuous improvement, and be organized. Professionalism at all levels is a must, along with respectful communication with Pratt employees, vendors, truck drivers, etc.

Essential Job Functions:

Manage a safe working environment in Fiber Yard, Reject Yard, and adjoining areas

  • Ensure all safety rules, procedures, and paperwork are being followed
  • Work with Mill Safety Department, ensure that all safety trainings are completed on time by all direct reports
  • Maintain a professional attitude and demeanor with employees, vendors, truck drivers, and other Pratt departments
  • Drive culture of accountability and responsibility
  • Perform training of all Fiber Yard processes, procedures, and equipment
  • Oversee and monitor the training of employees on all Fiber Yard and Reject Yard mobile equipment
  • Manage the reporting, documenting, and repair of any damage that occurs in Fiber Yard and surrounding areas
  • Lead communication between Mill, Recycle, CL, and Fiber Yard team members utilizing daily meetings, communication board, memos, etc.
  • Manage all housekeeping and ensure Mill expectations are met
  • Manage all equipment repairs and PMs, ensuring proper documentation is kept
  • Perform and report daily physical inventory and month-end physical inventory count. Work closely with Accounting and Recycle groups on accuracy
  • Work with Mill Purchasing, and outside vendors, to obtain quotations for work to be performed, supplies to be ordered, and services to be provided
  • Supervise and monitor inbound fiber quality so Mill quality standards are met
  • Direct quality checks of fiber using consistent methods and ongoing efforts
  • Manage the feed of fiber to meet Mill furnish requirements
  • Control the Reject Yard volume and cleanliness
  • Manage reject removal
  • Monitor and plan activities around the daily inbound delivery schedules with the help of Mill Buyer's forecast
  • Work with HR and Recycling on employee development, interviewing process, reviews, and discipline
  • Responsible for timekeeping and overtime management of direct reports
  • Coordinate vacation coverage between direct reports


EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Education plus Military service and/or Bachelor's Degree
  • 5-8 years management experience required
  • Knowledge of safety concepts required. Commitment to working safely in high paced environment mandatory


  1. Safety - It is Mill policy to work in a safe manner. The Fiber Yard Superintendent must possess a strong attitude toward safety. They will be responsible for helping promote a safe working environment. They will manage the adherence to all Mill and department safety rules, ensuring safe operation of industrial equipment, following lock-out / tag-out procedures, recognizing fire hazards, establishing housekeeping expectations, along with other safety concepts.
  2. Mental Ability - Complete comprehension of Mill production standards and expectations are vital to the Fiber Yard Superintendents responsibilities. They must possess a strong knowledge of paper grades produced and the different types and qualities of raw materials. They must be able to communicate effectively with all personnel in the plant and supervise direct reports. They must be able to operate a laptop, radio, cell phone, printer, and a calculator for basic mathematical computations.
  3. Physical Ability - The Fiber Yard Superintendent must be able to safely operate various types of industrial equipment. They must be able to operate steering controls, hand levers, and/or two foot pedals. There could be occasional climbing up a ladder and lifting items up to 50 pounds. They must have excellent depth perception to maneuver the equipment and raw materials around crowded areas with co-workers nearby. Must be able to get on and off equipment, able to use of hand tools, specifically cutting pliers. They must possess basic mechanical skills around mobile equipment. Must be able to perform in hot or cold conditions.

  1. Recognition of safety hazards in immediate working area and eliminating/minimizing the hazard
  2. Must be a strong and effective communicator
  3. Capable of maintaining a professional attitude and demeanor always
  4. Ability to effectively lead and supervise direct reports to achieve Mill standards
  5. Available to work flexible hours, when needed, and be periodically available off hours, weekends, and holidays
  6. Must be available to share weekend on-call responsibilities and be able to respond in 1-2 hours maximum
  7. Must possess strong problem solving skills and willing to try new ideas for continuous improvement
  8. Must be proficient in basic math skills
  9. Proficient in Google Docs and Microsoft Office
