Description
The Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology & Neuroscience at LSU Health Shreveport invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor Research.
The Research Assistant Professor will be engaged in a multidisciplinary research program in behavioral pharmacology and neuropharmacology and human subjects research in collaboration with Dr. Kevin Murnane at the School of Medicine, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. The research involves preclinical and translational studies designed to develop and evaluate novel drug formulations, new drug therapies, and underlying disease mechanisms, focused on substance use disorders, but aligned with co-occurring sleep, mood, pain, and neurodegenerative disorders.
The individual will oversee a research team conducting behavioral studies in laboratory rodents, including drug self-administration, pharmacokinetics, assays of sleep and sedation, and tests of anxiety and affective behavior. These preclinical investigations are integrated with ongoing and planned human clinical trials and brain imaging studies, including functional MRI (fMRI) and PET imaging, to validate mechanistic insights and therapeutic efficacy across species that are being conducted by additional staff, predoctoral fellows, and post-doctoral fellows in the laboratory. The ultimate goal is to establish translational continuity from bench to bedside, facilitating the progression of promising candidates into clinical testing.
In addition to laboratory research, the Research Assistant Professor will play a leadership role in developing new applications for extramural funding, supporting the regulatory advancement of candidate therapies, and contributing to regulatory documentation for pre-IND and IND submissions. Experience in data analysis, grant and manuscript writing, project management, and meeting critical milestones under tight timelines is essential.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in neuroscience and pharmacology, with opportunities to expand their expertise. Dr. Murnane will serve as a close mentor and collaborator to support the career development of the Research Assistant Professor while ensuring effective management of the research program. The candidate must be capable of independent project leadership and will also contribute to the mentorship of graduate students and trainees engaged in the program.
Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position. The work hours are generally Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM.
