REPORTS TO: Maintenance Foreman

JOB SUMMARY: The job of General Maintenance Worker was established for the purpose/s of providing maintenance services as needed and/or assigned; assisting in a wide variety of maintenance activities; addressing immediate operational and/or safety concerns; assisting skilled trades; and ensuring that tools, materials and vehicles are maintained in good working order and are available at job site when needed. Constructing and maintaining landscaped areas, parking lots, building pads and service roads; demolishing existing structures, clearing an area in preparation for additional work; ensuring availability of items to complete projects on time; and coordinating work flow and ensuring safety of workers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Arranges furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for special events.
  2. Assists skilled maintenance workers with projects (e.g. transporting and/or securing materials, completing specific tasks, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects in a safe, efficient manner.
  3. Cleans District buildings and grounds areas as needed and/or assigned for the purpose of providing an effective working/learning environment, preventing damage and/or limiting liability exposure.
  4. Coordinates with skilled tradesmen and/or assigned supervisor(s) for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
  5. Installs system component parts, classroom and office equipment and facility components (e.g. lighting, heating and ventilating systems, alarms, plumbing, security, electrical panels, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and workable environment.
  6. Maintains assigned vehicle, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.
  7. Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  8. Performs a wide variety of general and semiskilled maintenance activities (e.g. carpentry, painting, electrical, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects within established time frames.
  9. Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
  10. Repairs furniture and building system components for the purpose of ensuring a safe working condition.
  11. Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  12. Transports a variety of tools, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  13. Cleans landscaped areas and related items (e.g. storm drains, fields, litter, etc.) for the purpose of preventing flooding and removing hazards.
  14. Deposit sand and/or mulch around playground structures for the purpose of meeting Federal safety guidelines.
  15. Excavates district property (e.g. earth, asphalt, concrete, debris, etc.) for the purpose of installing, repairing, improving and maintaining landscaped areas and fields in a safe and clean condition.
  16. Hauls a variety of items (e.g. trash, debris, aggregates, etc.) for the purpose of removing unwanted items from facilities in compliance with established guidelines.
  17. Operates heavy equipment (e.g. fork lifts, back hoe, gang mowers, tractors, dump trucks, etc.) for the purpose of constructing and maintaining landscaped areas, fences, parking lots, building pads and service roads.
  18. Performs a variety of landscaping work for the purpose of completing assigned work orders and/or maintenance projects.
  19. Transports mowers and other heavy equipment to and from work sites for the purpose of ensuring their availability for use in completing work assignments.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  1. High school diploma or GED with additional specialized or technical training
  2. One to two years job-related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Must possess a current driver's license.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  1. Ability to read, analyze, and comprehend instructions, correspondence, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  2. Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and plans.
  3. Ability to write simple correspondence and properly fill out forms.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively to supervisors, other employees, and general public.
REASONING ABILITY:
  1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  2. Ability to interpret and carry out variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee will frequently be exposed to heat, cold, dust, dirt, and fumes, noise and vibration. Work is occasionally performed in an office environment. Work is performed in a smoke free environment.

REQUIREMENTS FOR MACHINES, EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND WORK AIDES:
  1. Operation of a Bossier Parish School Board vehicle with a current driver's license.
  2. Operation of equipment including, but not limited to, bulldozers, backhoes, track hoes, and concrete machinery and welder. Requires the use of hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc., and requires the use of power tools such as saws, routers, jointers, etc.
PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT: Employee acknowledges that he/she is required to maintain a high standard of professional conduct. Breach of said professional conduct includes, but is not limited to:
  1. Neglect of duty
  2. Dishonesty
  3. Engagement in acts that are contrary to Bossier Parish School Board policy
  4. Unlawful activities, or any other conduct which is seriously prejudicial to the school system

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) months, 240 days

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy by the immediate supervisor
