About the Role

Captain is responsible for managing our vessels, vessel personnel, and all barges in tow. Captains are responsible for crew members' safety and theirwell‑being while on our vessel. Captains must adhere to all United States Coast Guard regulations and company policies.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Navigate the vessel in a safe manner and ensure safety rules are followed by everyone.
  • Manage the daily efficiency of the vessel, along with the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel.
  • Direct and coordinate barge and towing operations, ensuring adherence to safety and environmental protocols and industry regulations.
  • Supervise safe and efficient operation and performance of crew, vessel and tow and ensure equipment is kept neat and in good working order.
  • Ensure that company policies and protocols are followed; report violations of policies or violations of Maritime Federal or State regulations to Marine Operations Manager.
  • Perform routine maintenance and operation of all machinery aboard the vessel or tow.
  • Manage crews, report anticipated crew shortages and direct crew in daily operations, providing training.
  • Set the watch standing schedule for crew, ensuring that no licensed wheelman works more than 12 hours in any 24‑hour period.
  • Report boat position; barges with cargo; time and location of exchange of barges; estimated time of arrival/departure; report delay time, place and cause; quality of fuel aboard and received, and any other pertinent information.
  • Maintain the Vessel Daily Log and ensure it is updated at the end of each 6‑hour watch by themselves or their relief.
  • Demonstrate commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

What We're Looking For

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Required Work Experience: 5–10 years experience operating towing vessels, and moving barges in our working area; 2 years experience supervising a tow boat crew

Required Training/Certifications: Master of Towing/Mate of Towing Vessels or Master of 200 gross tons or more with towing vessels endorsement license issued by the United States Coast Guard, with a radar observer endorsement.

Travel Requirements: Must be able to work 15 days on, 7 days off; stand watch for 12 hours each day, divided into six‑hour shifts.

Additional Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral
  • Demonstrable knowledge of local waterways and regulations
  • Experience with electronic navigation systems and associated technology
  • Ability to live in close quarters
  • Demonstrable understanding of vessel maintenance, cargo handling equipment and operational procedures
  • Ability to work well under pressure, in changing conditions
  • Required to walk on irregular surfaces that may be muddy and in reduced lighting conditions on barges; walk up and down several flights of stairs, 2–3 times per day.
  • Required to sit, or stand for up to six hours while on watch and operating the vessel.
  • Ability to lift, pull, push, and carry at least 50 lbs.
  • Per the requirements of the US Coast Guard, all licensed Captains take, and pass and physical every five years to renew their license.
  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
